How to Dye a Human Hair Wig

If you are reading this guide, the chances are that you want to dye your human hair wig. If that’s the case then you are in the right place.

This guide tells you absolutely everything you need to know about dying your human hair wig so that you know exactly what you need to do. But first, let’s take a look at what a human hair wig is.

As their name suggests, human hair wigs are wigs that are made using hair that has come from other humans. All of the hair within the wig is 100 percent natural meaning that they look and feel real, and because of this they are one of the more expensive types of wigs available.

As the hair in the wig is natural, these types of wigs tend to have a longer lifespan than synthetic wigs. With a human hair wig lasting on average between 1 and 3 years depending on how regularly you use them.

Both human hair and synthetic wigs are popular choices, however, the human hair wig tends to come out on top due to its convincing appearance.

As they are made with actual human hair, these wigs also require regular washing and styling to maintain their appearance. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how you dye a human hair wig.

How to Dye a Human Hair Wig

How to dye a human hair wig

As human hair wigs are made with natural hair they can be styled and treated exactly like human hair. This also means that, unlike synthetic hair wigs, human hair wigs can easily be dyed to change the color to suit you.

As the hair is totally natural, you don’t even have to buy a special hair dye for the wig, instead, you can use the exact same dye that you would use to dye your hair.

The process of coloring a human hair wig is actually very similar to coloring your hair, but just in case you aren’t sure, let’s take a look at how to dye a human hair wig.

Steps

Choose a dye

The first thing you need to do is select the type of hair dye that you want to use. As long as you purchase a hair dye for the wig you will easily be able to apply it.

However, it is worth noting that human hair wigs work exactly the same as your own hair. By this, we mean that it is always easier and more effective to dye a human hair wig darker, just as it is with the hair on your head.

It is always very difficult to make dark hair lighter, and this is also true of wigs. It is not the best idea to apply bleach to a human hair wig as this will weaken the hair in the wig and damage it beyond repair.

So as long as you are choosing a hair dye that is darker than the natural color of the wig, the process will be simple.

Prepare your dye

Once you have purchased your hair dye, you will need to prepare it for use on the wig. Pretty much every type of hair dye will come with instructions on how you should prepare it for use, so simply follow these instructions to prepare the dye.

Most hair dye home kits will also come with gloves, so once you have the dye mixed you should put on the gloves. Dying hair can be a messy process and you don’t want to end up with hair dye all over your hands.

The gloves that come with home kits often aren’t of the best quality but they do the job and can be easily thrown away once you have used them.

Although not all hair dyes provide them, we would recommend transferring the hair dye into a plastic bowl before you begin to apply it to the wig.

This will give you a better idea of whether or not you have enough dye to cover the whole wig. Longer wigs might require more than one box of hair dye to thoroughly cover the hair, so you should bear this in mind when purchasing the dye.

You should also not be put off by the appearance of the dye when it is in its raw form. Hair dye often appears a lot lighter in the bowl than it will on the hair of the wigs there is no need to worry.

Apply the dye

Now you can begin to apply the hair dye to the wig. To begin with, we would recommend applying a small amount of the dye on a few strands of hair from the wig.

We would suggest choosing an area of the wig that is not clearly visible just in case you are not satisfied with the color.

Once you have tested the color, and are sure that you like it, you can begin to apply it to the rest of the wig. This is where the process differs from dying the hair that is on your head.

For the best results, you need to completely saturate the wig with hair dye. To do this, we would recommend simply placing the wig into the bowl of hair dye that you have prepared.

With your gloved hands, you can then scoop the dye from inside of the bowl and cover the wig with it. You should be very gentle when doing this, ensuring that every layer of hair of the wig has had dye applied to it.

Finishing touches

You should then place your wig onto a wig stand and style it while it is wet with the dye. We recommend brushing the wig to ensure that the dye has thoroughly saturated it.

Following that, simply wait for the dye to develop. Once you have done that, simply wash the wig in your usual way to remove the dye. You can then style the wig, and all you have to do is wait for it to dry. It will then be ready to wear.

Summary

In short, it is very easy to dye your human hair wig. The process is very similar to dying human hair, and if anything it is made easier by the fact that the hair you are dying is not attached to your head.

So if you want to change the color of your human hair wig, simply follow this guide and the process will be simple.
